Partner visa screening framework

Partner eligibility

A two-minute screening of the baseline legal requirements for an Australian partner visa (820/801, 309/100 or 300). Indicative only - not legal advice.

01

Relationship status

02

Sponsor eligibility

Is your partner an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen?

03

Shared evidence

Do you have joint financial commitments - a lease, utilities or a shared bank account?

This screening is general information only, produces an indicative result and is not legal advice. Eligibility is confirmed in a consultation.

Behind the questions

What the screening actually tests

Relationship basis

Marriage, 12 months of de facto cohabitation, or a registered relationship in a participating state or territory - any of the three can found an application, each with different evidence demands.

Sponsorship limits

Sponsors face their own approval process, including character checks and limits on how many partners a person can sponsor over a lifetime. Sponsorship problems sink otherwise strong applications.

Evidence depth

Since the April 2026 decision-ready processing changes, the Department typically issues one s 56 request before deciding. Evidence gaps at lodgement now translate directly into refusals.

Screening is a start. Strategy wins
