The right pathway
Short stays are not one visa. Specialised, non-ongoing work points to the Subclass 400; tourism, family visits and business visitor activity point to the Subclass 600. Choosing correctly at the outset avoids a refusal for using the wrong vehicle.
Short Stay Specialist
For highly specialised, short-term, non-ongoing work not readily available in the Australian labour market. Usually granted for up to three months; longer only where clearly justified.

Visitor
For tourism, visiting family, and business visitor activity such as conferences and negotiations. Carries a no-work condition - it is not a work visa.

Can I work on a Subclass 400?
Yes, but only the specialised, non-ongoing work described in your application. The 400 is for short, highly specialised engagements - not general employment or an ongoing role, which points to an employer-sponsored visa instead.
How long is a short stay visa valid?
The Subclass 400 is usually granted for up to three months, with a longer period only where a strong case is made. Visitor 600 stays are typically granted for up to three, six or twelve months depending on your circumstances.
Should I use a 400 or a 600?
If the purpose involves genuinely specialised short-term work, the 400 is usually correct. If it is tourism, a family visit or business visitor activity with no work, the 600 fits. Using the wrong vehicle is a common cause of refusal - we advise on the right one at the outset.
